Remarks: Nancy Pelosi & Chuck Schumer Press Conference After Meeting with President Trump 1/4/19.
After a two-hour meeting with President Donald Trump at the White House on Friday, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters Trump did not want to make a deal to reopen the government and said he was willing to keep it closed for a very long time.
“The bottom line is very simple. We made a plea to the president, once again, ‘Don’t hold millions of Americans, hundreds of thousands of workers, hostage. Open up the government, and let’s continue the discussions,’” Schumer said outside the West Wing.
“We told the president, we need the government open,” he continued. “He resisted. In fact, he said he’d keep the government closed for a very long period of time, months or even years.
The discussion then, we discussed a bunch of issues, as the leader said, that was somewhat contentious. We will continue discussing, of course. But, it’s very hard to see how progress will be made unless they open up the government.”
Trump will be hosting another press conference shortly in the Rose Garden to address the continuing shutdown.
The partial government shutdown is about to enter its third week as Republicans and Democrats continue to haggle over funding for a wall on the southern border.
